Preventable Healthcare Mistakes Result in 180,000 Annual Medicare Deaths

The Office of Inspector General for the Department of Health and Human Services released a study stating that one out of every seven Medicare patients is harmed as a result of medical care received while hospitalized. Of these patients, 180,000 die from these mistakes. Most of the mistakes were preventable according to the study.

This is a scary statistic from the Department of Health and Human Services. This study leads to the question, how many more patients are injured unnecessarily through the medical malpractice of doctors and nurses in hospital settings? How many mistakes go unreported? Many patients are unsure if a mistake has occurred when there is a bad outcome from a hospitalization.
